Get Involved with the Alameda County Court’s Day of Court Mediation Program
The Alameda County Superior Court offers a Day of Court Mediation Program that gives trained mediators the chance to support access to justice in a direct and meaningful way. Volunteer mediators meet with parties in small claims, civil harassment and unlawful detainer cases on the day of their hearing. Their role is to help the parties talk through the issues in dispute and work toward mutually acceptable resolutions before going in front of a judge.
Volunteers serve under general supervision from the court and become an important part of helping litigants navigate high stress situations. This program is a good fit for mediators who want hands-on experience while contributing to the fair and efficient administration of justice.
Who the Court Is Looking For
The ideal volunteer mediator has completed at least 40 hours of mediation training and has conducted or observed at least five civil mediations in the past year. The court is also looking for volunteers who are comfortable working with people from a wide range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Volunteers should be able to commit to the panel for at least one year.
If you meet most but not all of the experience requirements, you may still qualify. Onsite mentoring may be available for mediators who need additional observation or experience. The court may also offer additional training as resources allow.
How to Apply
To join the Day of Court Mediation Program, you will need to create an online account with the court. After creating a password, you can begin your application and return to it later if needed. The application also becomes your mediator profile, so keep your login information for future updates.
If you have questions, contact the court’s ADR Program by email at adrprogram@alameda.courts.ca.gov or by phone at 510-891-6055.
