Celebrating Independence by Protecting Its Foundation
As we approach Independence Day, many of us reflect on the ideals that shaped the founding of our country – liberty, justice, and the belief that no one is above the law. These principles are not just lofty phrases from a bygone era; they are the living foundation of our democracy. And as attorneys, we are uniquely positioned and professionally obligated to safeguard them.
July 4th commemorates the Declaration of Independence, a bold assertion of rights and governance under law. While the rule of law wasn’t explicitly named in 1776, its spirit was clear: a government of laws, not of men. It’s what ensures fair process, protects individual rights, and holds power accountable. Without it, freedom becomes fragile.
In today’s climate, where trust in institutions is strained and the legal system is sometimes politicized, the rule of law needs champions. That responsibility doesn’t fall only on judges or elected officials. It falls on all of us who have sworn to uphold the Constitution and serve justice.
This Independence Day, let’s do more than celebrate. Let’s recommit.
Whether through pro bono work, mentorship, community education, or nonprofit service, there are countless ways lawyers can put the rule of law into action outside the courtroom.
To help you get started, we invite you to our upcoming virtual MCLE, “Rule of Law in Action,” on July 8 at Noon. This program features a lineup of organizations sharing meaningful ways attorneys can engage in public service and protect democratic principles through everyday acts of legal stewardship.

This Fourth of July, may we all reflect not only on the freedoms we enjoy but on the responsibilities we bear—and the role we can play in ensuring the rule of law endures for generations to come.
Happy Independence Day.
