Your Guide to Choosing a Legal Practice Area

How to Choose a Legal Practice Area

ACBA Blog - how to choose a legal practice areaDo you find yourself asking, “what kind of law do I want to practice?” Choosing a legal career path can feel overwhelming—law is a vast field with countless practice areas, each with its own unique challenges and rewards. Whether you’re a law student, a recent graduate, or even an attorney considering a shift, figuring out what kind of law to practice is an important step toward a fulfilling career. We asked around and compiled a few ways to explore your options and find the right fit.

1. Reflect on Your Interests and Strengths

Start by asking yourself:

  • What subjects in law school did I enjoy most?
  • Do I prefer research and writing, or do I thrive in oral advocacy?
  • Do I want to work with individuals, businesses, or government entities?
  • Am I drawn to problem-solving, negotiation, or courtroom litigation?

Your natural interests and skills can help point you toward an area of law that aligns with your strengths!

2. Gain Practical Experience

There’s no substitute for hands-on experience. Seek out internships, clerkships, and volunteer opportunities in different practice areas. Legal clinics, pro bono work, and summer associate positions provide valuable exposure to real-world legal work and help you determine what excites (or bores) you.

3. Talk to Practicing Attorneys

Networking with attorneys in different fields can provide firsthand insight into what daily life in that practice looks like. Reach out to alumni, bar association members, or mentors and ask about their experiences. The ACBA holds networking events that are perfect opportunities to talk with practicing attorneys – and you’ll find they are eager to share their advice. Our Barristers Section (attorneys in practice for 10 years or less) runs a great mentorship program. Some useful questions include:

  • What do you love about your practice area?
  • What challenges come with it?
  • What would you tell someone considering this field?
  • Related – what do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

4. Consider Work-Life Balance and Career Goals

Different areas of law come with different work cultures and demands. If you value predictable hours, a transactional or in-house practice may be a better fit than litigation. If you love high-stakes advocacy, criminal or trial law might be ideal. Think about your long-term career goals and how different practice areas align with them.

5. Stay Open to Change

Your first job doesn’t have to define your entire career. Many lawyers pivot into different areas as their interests evolve or new opportunities arise. Stay flexible and willing to explore different paths—your ideal practice area may be one you hadn’t considered initially. MCLEs are free in 2025 for ACBA members, giving you the option to explore many different practice areas.

Final Thoughts – Finding the right area of law to practice is a journey, not a one-time decision. By reflecting on your interests, gaining practical experience, seeking advice, and considering your lifestyle goals, you’ll be in a strong position to choose a fulfilling legal career.
