Networking Tips for Building Meaningful Connections

networking adviceIn a world where genuine connections can open doors, effective networking is a skill worth mastering. Too often, networking conversations feel stiff or transactional. Instead, focus on building authentic relationships by asking engaging, thoughtful questions.

1. Start with Curiosity: “Working on anything exciting lately?”

Skip the tired “What do you do?” or “what is your practice area” questions. Instead, ask, “Are you working on anything exciting lately?” This question invites people to share projects they’re passionate about or accomplishments they’re proud of. You’ll often discover something unique about them, and it sets a positive tone for the conversation.

For example, someone might tell you about a pro bono case, a new business venture, or an innovative approach they’re developing. This allows you to connect on a deeper level and opens the door for you to share your own experiences.

2. Focus on Growth: “What are your goals right now?”

Asking about someone’s goals shows you’re interested in their aspirations and not just their current job title. This question shifts the conversation toward growth and ambition, creating a more dynamic exchange.

For instance, someone might reveal that they’re aiming to transition into a new area of law, start a podcast, or build their network. If you find common ground or know someone who can help them, this creates a natural opportunity to provide value, strengthening the connection.

3. Lay the Groundwork for Follow-Up

Good networking doesn’t stop when the event ends. Take notes—whether mental or written—about key points in your conversations. The next time you meet, reference something they mentioned, such as the progress of their project or their goal.

For example, you could say, “Last time we spoke, you mentioned launching a CLE series. How’s that going?” This not only shows that you listened but also builds trust and rapport.

Networking That Lasts

Great networking isn’t about collecting business cards; it’s about building meaningful connections. By asking thoughtful questions and focusing on growth and goals, you position yourself as someone who is genuinely interested in others. That authenticity not only leaves a positive impression but also lays the foundation for future opportunities.
