Judicial Vacancies on California’s Federal District Courts

Senator Butler’s Judicial Advisory Committee is currently soliciting applicants for upcoming judicial vacancies on California’s Federal District Courts. The Judicial Advisory Committees are established in each Federal District to review candidates for the Federal Bench and make recommendations to Senator Butler. If you know of a candidate you believe would serve with distinction as a Federal District Judge, please encourage them to submit an application to be considered for future openings to serve as an Article III Judge on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

If you previously submitted an application to the Judicial Advisory Committee of Senator Dianne Feinstein since January 2021, your application will be considered by Senator Butler for future openings on the Federal District Courts. Any applicants who previously submitted an application to Senator Feinstein’s Judicial Advisory Committee are welcomed and encouraged to provide an updated application to Senator Butler’s Judicial Advisory Committee.

If you are interested in applying and have not previously submitted an application, please contact Jessica Jensen (Senator Butler’s Chief Counsel) at jessica_jensen@judiciary-dem.senate.gov to request a copy of the application. The application will also be available on Senator Butler’s official website in the coming weeks.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, and the Committee will be working to provide candidates to the Senator as soon as possible. Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible, and no later than Monday, November 27, 2023.

If you or a potential candidate would like more information about the process, please contact David Casey (Statewide Judicial Selection Chair) at (619) 238-1811 or Louise Renne (Northern District Committee Chair) at (415) 678-3805.
