Maria MorgaACBA member Maria Morga, 50, of Alameda County, has been appointed to serve as a Judge in the Alameda County Superior Court. Morga has served as Supervising Deputy State Public Defender at the Office of the State Public Defender since 2020 and has served in several roles there since 2004, including Senior Deputy State Public Defender and Deputy State Public Defender. She was an Associate at the Whatley Law Firm in 2004 and served as a Deputy Public Defender at the San Francisco County Public Defender’s Office from 2001 to 2003. Morga was General Counsel at ePredix Inc. in 2000 and an Associate at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal in 1999. She earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. Morga fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Trina L. Thompson. She is a Democrat.

Mark FickesACBA member Mark Fickes, Partner at Cannata, O’Toole Fickes & Olson LLP, was selected as a Commissioner in the Alameda County Superior Court. Mr. Fickes began practicing law in 1995 and has tried dozens of cases to verdict in state and federal courts. Before joining the firm, Mr. Fickes served as trial counsel at the San Francisco Regional Office of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Before joining the SEC, Mr. Fickes was in private practice at the law firm of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich and Rosati and litigation boutique Glynn & Finley. He began his career as a prosecutor with the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office where he tried numerous cases involving serious or violent felonies. Mr. Fickes formerly served as a member of the Alameda County Court Appointed Attorneys Program (“CAAP”). Mr. Fickes serves on the Board of Directors of Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom, the oldest and largest LGBT+ bar association in the U.S. He is a regular faculty member for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, teaching in the deposition and trial practice programs.
