Legal Assistance for Seniors

Legal Assistance for Seniors is the ACBA 2019 recipient of our Distinguished Service Award for Community Organization. They were recognized on January 24, 2019 at the ACBA Installation and Distinguished Service Awards Dinner.

Legal Assistants for Seniors (LAS ) champions the rights of older adults and works to ensure the independence and dignity of seniors by protecting their legal rights through education, counseling, and advocacy.

LAS works closely with Legal Access Alameda, the Alameda County Bar Association, cities throughout Alameda County, Alameda County Departments, Adult Protective Services, the District Attorney’s Office, law enforcement agencies and the Courts to assist Alameda County residents who are victims of physical, emotional or financial elder abuse.

LAS has been an active participant and partner at Legal Access Alameda’s (formerly VLSC) Guardianship Day of Court Clinic. A partnership between Legal Access Alameda, Alameda County Self-Help Services, and the Courts, this clinic helps provide unrepresented guardianship petitioners, many of whom are grandparents, with support in completing their petitions and navigating the legal system to successfully become legal guardians to protect the children in their care.

The ACBA also appreciates the extensive community education provided by LAS throughout the Bay Area to seniors, caregivers, people with disabilities and service providers on a variety of legal and health care related topics designed to educate and protect the dignity and independence of older adults.

LAS is a stalwart supporter of seniors in our community and the ACBA is grateful for their dedication to this underserved community.
