WookSun Hong is the ACBA 2019 recipient of our Distinguished Service Award for Attorney. He was recognized on January 24, 2019 at the ACBA Installation and Distinguished Service Awards Dinner.

WookSun (Phil) Hong is an access to justice champion, and an invaluable asset to the ACBA and broader legal community. For three years since founding his practice, WookSun has almost single-handedly staffed the ACBA Lawyer Referral Service’s modest means panel for residential and commercial eviction defense and affirmative habitability cases. WookSun also represents low-income landlords. He serves on numerous modest means referral panels throughout the Bay Area. He has gained respect among a diversity of communities often disenfranchised in the legal system by maintaining an affordable sliding scale price model.

Virtually every month you can find WookSun volunteering at Legal Access’ free CLASP clinic. His generosity of spirit extends to his peers. He is an instrumental coach, colleague, and alumni at Legal Access’ Bay Area Legal Incubator.  He further spreads his impact by training attorneys throughout the Bay Area in commercial unlawful detainer defense, an area in which few attorneys provide representation.

Beyond his commitment to access to justice, WookSun is an excellent attorney and spokesman on behalf of some of the most vulnerable communities in our county. As such, he often is interviewed by the East Bay Express surrounding his legal victories, social impact and ideas for social change. Most certainly, he is a rising star.
