Lunch (or snacks for evening events) will be provided for most MCLE programs. Registration begins 30 minutes prior to program start time, and events are held at the ACBA office, at 1000 Broadway, Suite 480, in Oakland, unless stated otherwise. Please note: there will be a $10 administrative fee if you cannot make the program, and do not cancel in advance. A $10 fee will also be assessed for day-of and walk-in registrations.

Changes to the Federal Rules of Bankruptcy Procedure Affecting Chapter 13 Cases

This program will discuss changes to the Federal Rules of Bankruptcy Procedure that took effect on December 1, 2017, including proof of claim by secured creditors, claims bar dates, objection to claims and determination of value under 11 USC Section 506(a) and lien avoidance.

Passing On: Addressing Issues of Fairness in Estate Planning

Estate planning attorneys often are asked by their clients whether their intended estate plan is fair.  But what is “fair” and from whose perspective is fairness to be judged? Presented by a sociologist and an attorney/mediator, this session addresses a series of themes relating to questions of fairness and social justice as they affect the attorney’s role in guiding clients through the decision-making process.

The Importance of I.T. Hygiene for Attorneys

Tools like WiFi, smartphones, cloud computing, and other technologies that were non-existent twenty years ago are now indispensable to the modern practice of law. As attorneys, are we using these tools in a way that preserves our duty to our clients and to the public? Even the smartest and most diligent of attorneys can land herself in ethical hot water by being careless in her use of technology. In this CLE, we will explore what it means for an attorney to practice good IT hygiene and the potential ethical pitfalls of failing to do so.
