About the Section

The Family Law Section provides educational and networking opportunities for family law attorneys, and serves as a liaison between the Family Law Courts, Family Court Services, and the ACBA.

Tuesday, March 24, 2015, from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Please join the ACBA Family Law Section and speakers Charlie Burak and Eileen Preville for a program on the division of restricted employment benefits. This program will cover the purpose of each type of plan, including stock options, RSUs, ESOP plans, and stock appreciation plans. Our speakers will also cover the basics of division and apportionment, dive into tax issues, and address common problems that often accompany such division of benefits, including:
  • transfer limitations
  • support versus property characterization
  • child support “guideline” issues
  • division documents, including samples
  • confidentiality issues – blackout periods
Thursday April 23, 2015, from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Marvin Litigation in California. This program will provide an overview of California litigation arising under the Supreme Court’s decision in Marvin v. Marvin (1976) 18 Cal.3d 660, also commonly known as “palimony” litigation, with an emphasis on what family law attorneys should know about these types of cases.

Please join the ACBA Family Law Section for a program on what every family law attorney should expect when handling a case that involves a 730 child custody evaluation, and how to prepare clients for court ordered co-parenting sessions. Speaker Jill Sardeson will answer questions and provide insight into the entire process based on her years of experience providing child custody evaluations and co-parenting counseling.
