Chief District Judge Wilken was appointed to the bench by President Bill Clinton in 1993 after 10 years as a federal court magistrate, preceded by six years of private law practice and three years with the federal public defender’s office. She graduated from Stanford University and the UC Berkeley School of Law.

By virtue of seniority, she became Chief District Judge of the Northern District of California in 2012, adding administrative duties to her work in the courtroom. Judge Wilken recently announced that she will be transferring to senior status at the end of the year and stepping down as Chief District Judge.
