This brown bag program will explore mediation of employment-related cases from the perspectives of three panelists: plaintiffs' attorney Kathryn Burkett Dickson, defense attorney Margaret Hart Edwards, and employment mediator Claudia Viera.

The panelists will describe their best practices from their unique perspectives, including:

    How to select an appropriate mediator
  • How to prepare themselves and their clients for mediation
  • What information to share with mediators and when, and what to keep private
  • Various negotiating strategies, including bracketing and mediators proposals

For nearly a decade, Claudia Viera has mediated all types of employment disputes, from harassment and discrimination claims to wage and hour class actions. A compassionate yet tenacious mediator, Claudia works with both sides to settle cases in ways that serve the parties better than their litigation alternatives. She works well with highly-emotional clients as well as those requiring complex risk analysis. Claudia is a frequent speaker for local Bar associations and the former co-Chair of the San Francisco Bar Associations Mediation Committee. She currently serves as the Society Session Chair on the Board of the Mediation Society. Claudia is a graduate of UC Berkeley School of Law.
Margaret Edwards

Margaret Hart Edwards advises and represents employers in a broad variety of employment and labor matters focusing on the defense of discrimination, retaliation and wrongful discharge claims, and discrimination and wage and hour class actions. Additionally, Margaret routinely advises employers on legal compliance, litigation prevention measures and business restructuring. She also provides training to managers and human resources professionals on employment law subjects. A frequent speaker, Margaret has appeared before industry, human resources and bar groups. She has lectured at the UC Berkeley, Stanford University, and Golden Gate University Schools of Law.
Kathryn B. Dickson

Kathryn Dickson is a principal at Dickson Geesman in Oakland and has consistently been rated as one of California's top plaintiffs' employment litigators. She has over 35 years of experience and has been selected as one of Northern California's Super Lawyers in her practice area each year since 2004. Kathy serves as a Court-appointed Early Neutral Evaluator and Mediator for the U.S. Federal Courts. In addition, she serves on the governing Council of the American Bar Association Labor & Employment Section. She is a graduate of Stanford University and the UC Hastings School of Law.
