Representatives of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing will discuss the types of discrimnation claims being made against rental property owners, leasing agents, and property managers and the best practices to avoid or defend against these types of claims.

Nelson Chan is Associate Chief Counsel for Education Outreach at the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, where he is responsible for coordinating DFEH educational clinics and outreach to entities and individuals affected or impacted by state discrimination laws pertaining to employment and housing.

Paul E. Smith is the Intake Branch Chief of the San Francisco Regional Office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Developmentā€™s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, which is the office that reviews and enforces claims of discrimination. He was previously the Investigation Branch Chief. Mr. Smith is a member of the California Bar.
